Artist Statement

"I have to be emotionally invested in a subject in order to draw it. The shape, the colors, and the composition all have to captivate me, because the process is so all consuming, and requires a deep commitment.  However, once the commitment is made, there is no turning back.

When I create a drawing, I systematically organize the layout and the color scheme well ahead of time, before I ever begin the work.  As my drawing progresses, I become more and more entrenched -- and after many ups and downs, mistakes and corrections, delightful new discoveries and improvements -- I have bonded with the piece.  At this point, I am positive that I will be satisfied with the outcome, and I have already fallen in love with it.

I’ve always been an artist, painting and drawing since I could hold a pencil.  On and off throughout my life, I would create art, but when I couldn’t draw or paint, I would make crafts, or cook, or write poetry.  I have to express my creativity in some way, because if I don't, I would feel extremely stifled and deprived.  And, the more I draw, the more I become immersed in the visual world, and everything I see is through an artist’s filter.  Everything I look at is subject for a drawing.  I live in a world of colors, textures, shapes, and beauty, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!"
